‘Frozen’ special coming to ABC; Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel to reprise roles

It could happen -

In what should be a surprise to almost nobody out there at all, ABC is looking at some more creative ways to expand the brand of “Frozen.” Today, they’ve confirmed that there is an upcoming holiday special based on the movie, which is going to air at some point during the 2017 holiday season.

At the moment, most of the original cast (Idina Menzel as Elsa, Kristen Bell as Anna, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as Olaf) will be returning to give a festive twist on the story that made billions of dollars for Disney over the past few years. This movie has inspired merchandise across the planet, and there is even now a season of “Once Upon a Time” that features some of the characters in part on the network.

This is far from the first time that we’ve seen specials based on popular movie characters, especially at certain times of the year. Shrek and Toy Story in particular are two franchises that have expanded already onto TV, with some more potentially coming down the road. The great thing about these sort of events is that for the most part, they are evergreen. Sure, you can only air a holiday special so many times a year, but this is the sort of thing families can grow up to and eventually watch with their children down the road.

Of course, we also anticipate many more feature films coming in this franchise … but this is something that is really out of our own personal realm of expertise. Here at CarterMatt, our focus is TV.
