TV Revivals: Could ‘Chuck’ find new stories to tell with Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski?

“Chuck” is one of our favorite TV shows of all time, and we feel like we’ve made absolutely no attempt to shy away from that over the years. It had that perfect combination of almost everything we love from this medium: Humor, heart, sharp writing, great characters, and a true underdog spirit. It’s a show that remains beloved still even after its Cinderella story ended on NBC, which lasted for five seasons thanks almost entirely to diehard fans who fought hard time and time again to spare it from cancellation.

In this edition of our month-long TV Revivals series, we’re going to do our best to examine what “Chuck” still has to offer, and if there’s a way to successfully bring it back, whether it be on NBC or somewhere else.

How it ended – The great news is that Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi) and Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) seemingly ended up back together, but Sarah had lost many of her memories as a result of the latest Intersect. Chuck found her on the beach and kissed her, hoping that a fairy-tale suggestion from Morgan (Joshua Gomez) would turn out to actually work. Meanwhile, Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) moved to Chicago, and Casey (Adam Baldwin) gave Morgan and Alex (Mekenna Melvin) permission to move in together.

How it could continue – We start here in a very interesting / obvious place: Learning if Sarah ever got her memories back. While the series finale “Chuck Versus the Goodbye” was well-received by many, we know many wished it was more of a straightforward happy ending. From here, there are plenty of ways in which to round up most of the old team to work on a new mission. This show was excellent over the years in tying up stories and establishing new ones, given that so many finales had to be written in a way where they could function as the end of the show. Then, when it was renewed a new villain would surface and more mythology could unfold.

Can it be brought back? – It’s more likely than with some of the other shows we’ve discussed, but that doesn’t mean it is imminent. The cast has shown some interest here and there in doing more, but there are a lot of challenges in having it happen. For one, many of the actors involved now have other commitments, and it would be tough to do something other than a shorter project similar to what “The X-Files” has done or what “Gilmore Girls” is currently doing.

Also, you’d have to find the right suitor. Netflix has streamed the episodes for quite some time, and of on paper it seems like it’d be a perfect home for the show. Then again, who knows? Maybe there are some cable options out there; its ratings were probably too low at the time of season 5 for NBC to want it back. Crowd-funding could also be possible in theory, given that only recently “Mystery Science Theater 3000” found a way to come back using money given through Kickstarter.
