2016 SAG Awards: ‘Game of Thrones,’ Idris Elba, Rami Malek, ‘Veep’ lead our predictions

Saturday night will mark the 2016 SAG Awards on TNT / TBS, and this awards show is for the most part the most predictable of what we’d consider the Big Four of TV awards shows alongside the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and the Critics’ Choice Awards. They tend to nominate the same things over and over again, and often the recipients follow the lead of what we’ve seen elsewhere.

Will this be the same this year? For the sake of this article, we’re going to do our part to get inside the head of a SAG voter and figure out which actors and ensembles are going to come out of the night with the incredibly-heavy trophies in their possession.

Drama Ensemble – “Game of Thrones.” We’d probably go with “Mr. Robot,” “The Leftovers,” or “Outlander” if they were nominated. They’re not.

Comedy Ensemble – “Veep.” We’re picking someone against the grain because people love “Transparent,” but we think the Amazon comedy has lost a little bit of critical attention in season 2.

Drama Actor – Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot.” This one feels fairly easy to call. He didn’t win the Golden Globe, but he may take home everything else in awards season.

Drama Actress – Viola Davis, “How to Get Away with Murder.” Unless the SAG Awards give it to Maggie Smith again (they do have that history), Viola’s got this.

Comedy Actor – Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent.” In the absence of other hip nominees, he’s got to be the favorite.

Comedy Actress – Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation.” The SAG Awards love to give people trophies from network TV in this category. Amy’s deserving, and this was the show’s final season.

Miniseries / TV Movie Actor – Idris Elba, “Luther.” Hopefully this will make us feel better over the “Beasts of No Nation” Oscar snub.

Miniseries / TV Movie Actress – Queen Latifah, “Bessie.” Watch out for Nicole Kidman, though … just because she’s Nicole Kidman.

Stunt Ensemble – “Game of Thrones.” It’s the safe choice, but we’d almost like to see “The Walking Dead” or “The Blacklist” win since they rarely ever win anything.
