‘Chicago PD’ spin-off ‘Chicago Law’ now in official development

Chicago -

When we last spoke about the idea of a “Chicago PD” spin-off entitled “Chicago Law,” that was all that it was: An idea. Now, it is becoming something much more than that. – we are looking at it becoming a reality.

As reported by Deadline, NBC is now working on the aforementioned legal drama, which will be the fourth series set in the Windy City and also the fifth on the network from executive producer Dick Wolf. This series could be ordered officially by the end of the spring, and if so it would be eyed as a potential midseason series for the 2016-17 season. This was the original plan for “Chicago Med,” but it was pushed forward due to the Melissa George series (now titled “Heartbeat”) being pushed back to accommodate her pregnancy.

In a statement, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke had the following to say:

“Dick Wolf has been responsible for some of the biggest hits in NBC history, including SVU and the current three Chicago dramas, Fire, P.D., and Med … The Chicago universe will continue to grow as we are in active development on Chicago Law (working title).”

Could this show be a slam dunk? We actually do think there is room for another good legal drama on TV with “The Good Wife” likely ending over the next couple of years, but the main question we have is whether or not NBC is potentially working on turning all of their shows into Chicago series overkill. Sure, nobody has to watch all four of them, but you kind of have to if you want to pick up on every intricacy in the crossover episodes.
