Could ‘American Idol’ not be in its final season? Jennifer Lopez open to possible return

American Idol -Throughout everything from the show itself to many of its promotional graphics, “American Idol” has tried to make it clear that it is in its “farewell season.” However, is it necessary true that this will be the case?

It’s been a bit of an interesting study seeing how many have reacted to the ratings for this season so far, which have been rather good. Some out there have looked at this as a sign that the show could be brought back (and soon) given that “Empire” is really the only Fox show getting better numbers. In talking about this subject recently at TCA, judge Jennifer Lopez said the following per TV Guide:

“[As for] whether [Fox is] making a mistake or not? Everybody just goes with a feeling in the moment. And if that’s their feeling right now, that’s their feeling. You never know. With a format like this that could work at any time, it’s possible. … I haven’t thought about it much, but hypothetically if that happened, American Idol has a special place in my heart, and it’s something I would consider. [I’ll] always be there when they call.”

Ultimately, we do think that people praising the show’s ratings right now are being a little misled. The numbers are always better in the audition rounds than later in the season, and while they are better right now than they were at the end of season 14, they’re also down from the season 14 audition numbers. If this trajectory continues, everyone may think that it is time for the show to go come April.

With that being said, though, we could see the series returning in a few years once the whole singing-show craze dies down and there is a whole in the market again.
