Is Felicity Smoak ultimately the “Arrow” version of Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Oracle? This is a theory that has been discussed for several years now. There have been comments out there suggesting that this may have been the original idea behind the character, and the season 3 episode “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak” was even at one point titled Oracle.
Following the shooting in the season 4 finale, these rumors only started to pick up steam that Felicity could be in some way paralyzed and forced to use only a wheelchair (another Oracle trademark). So is all of this happening? Not exactly…
Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Wendy Mericle made it clear that the writers ultimately have a different direction that they are going to take for this character:
“That’s something we definitely talked about [doing] with Felicity in the beginning…. But yeah, it will not be Oracle, sadly … People have to tune in to see what happens.”
We ultimately think this decision was made for a similar reason to John Diggle not ultimately becoming the Green Lantern: There’s no need for these characters to simply become other characters from the comic books: They’re great on their own. Why in the world would they need to become someone else to shine?
Of course, one other thing to remember here is that just because Felicity is not becoming Oracle does not render her numb from any other life changes. We’re guessing that there are still going to be some sort of aftereffects that came with what happened in the shooting.
