Ratings: ‘Blue Bloods,’ ‘MasterChef Junior’ defeat ‘Shark Tank’; ‘Hawaii Five-0’ has huge surge

Blue Bloods season 6It is clear that for one reason or another, this past week is mostly a great one for CBS. Many of their shows have already experienced some great ratings, and this can definitely be said all over again after looking at some of the numbers for Friday night’s television lineup.

The winners – A big one goes to “Blue Bloods” first and foremost, which actually defeated “Shark Tank” with a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic to its 1.3. “MasterChef Junior” actually won the night with a 1.5. Even “Hawaii Five-0” tied the ABC reality show by rising almost 25% versus its most-recent episode to a 1.3, and “Undercover Boss” led the CBS lineup with a 1.2. “Undateable” also improved to a 0.8.

Why all the big increases? It has to do mostly with the fact that we’re looking at cold weather in many markets that are out there. This certainly creates another incentive for people to stay in and watch TV, and for on reason or another CBS’ procedurals have been a key beneficiary of that. Maybe it is because these shows can be picked up and enjoyed without really too much thought or effort in advance. You can dive into them easily.

The losers – There wasn’t a huge one anywhere across the board, but why is “Shark Tank” no longer the Friday smash that it once was? (It wasn’t that long ago that the series was getting 2.0 ratings.) Ultimately, we think that this is just an example of trend TV. People really dug Mr. Wonderful and some of the products on the show, but it may not be must-see TV. It’s also something that is easy to just catch in repeats or the DVR, since it’s not like anyone will spoil the outcome to you.
