‘Call the Midwife’ season 5 Christmas Special: Charlotte Ritchie teases story

Call the Midwife -

For everyone who has been waiting with bated breath for more from “Call the Midwife,” we come bearing a little bit of good news: The annual Christmas Special is almost here! In just over a day’s time we are returning to Poplar and Nonnatus House, and we are very eager to see what is going to unfold.

With that being said, we’re also going into this special well aware of the fact that these episodes do have a tendency to be a little bit somber. Happy endings are not always the focus, and instead, the show tries to create something that is occasionally hopeful while still showing some of the struggle and hardship of the times. Charlotte Ritchie is getting set to appear in her first Special since joining the show, and speaking to the Radio Times, she had the following to say about Barbara’s story in particular:

“Barbara’s generally a bit unhappy because she gets homesick at Christmas … She’s not allowed to go home and that slightly dampens the Christmas spirit in her, but there’s a lovely family feeling at Nonnatus House  by the end of it.”

Meanwhile, she also said the following about some of the emotions that go into the show, proving what we said earlier about “the struggle” being true:

“It’s such a jolly show in so many ways. It’ll be just gorgeous and happy and then suddenly you’re hit with something ridiculously serious. You’re like, ‘I thought this was going to be a tea cosy and actually it’s a hot kettle.’ We’ll be crying and laughing in equal measure.”

We’ll be back with a review of the special after it airs, so we’ll get a chance to see how many emotions are crammed into it.
