Ratings: ‘The Wiz Live!’ wins big; ‘The Vampire Diaries’ slides on quiet night (12/3/2015)

The Wiz -There really was not much that took place on TV Thursday night, and as a result of that, you better prepare yourselves for a somewhat-quieter ratings article than usual.

The winners – It was not a quiet night at all for “The Wiz Live!” on NBC, as the decision to adapt the popular “Wizard of Oz”-based production for TV turned out to be a smart one. As a whole, “The Wiz” drew a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which marks a pretty huge increase from the “Peter Pan Live!” ratings, even if it does rate below the production of “The Sound of Music” featuring Carrie Underwood. We think that it was the right move here to cater towards not much music fans, but also African-American families with a production that you don’t typically see on TV.

We suppose that we should also mention that the NFL broadcast on CBS ended up technically winning the night with a 3.5. While that is great in some ways for the network, we’ve seen football games certainly draw higher numbers as a whole.

The losers – It was hardly great news for “The Vampire Diaries,” who really could not take advantage of the lesser competition outside of “The Wiz.” The latest episode drew in total a 0.5 rating, which helps in some ways to further explain why the show is being moved to Fridays in the new year. Obviously The CW thinks that it can get a little bit more out of this night, and maybe they can. “The Originals” at present is at a 0.5 rating, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it falls down to a 0.4 once the final numbers are unveiled.
