Midseason Report Card: Did ‘Chicago PD’ season 3 have a great run?

Chicago PD -Chicago PD” is one of those crime shows that enters every season with a rather enormous challenge: How in the world to reinvent itself. While you never want to mess around too much with a formula, you also have to make each season feel like its own animal, and have people excited about things that you are doing that you haven’t quite done before.

So far into season 3, we’d consider the story a mixed bag. For more, let’s dive into the latest edition of our Midseason Report Card series.

What worked – Lindsay and Halstead working things out! It’s such a relief to see that the show is finally just deciding that they are better off pairing up these two characters now than continuing to play some sort of needless song and dance. Nobody wants that; instead, they just want to see these two characters starting to plan for some sort of future. The show giving them this chance could mean some more human stories to balance out a little bit of the drama and police work.

Also, we feel like Ruzek and Burgess have been given plenty of good material this year courtesy of the strains of their relationship, and while we would occasionally love to see more from Voight other than “case has connection to his past,” we are starting to appreciate him more and more as a foundation to the show.

What didn’t – At this particular moment in time, we’re still trying to figure out the Olinsky story, which really didn’t make a whole lot of sense given everything he was willing to sacrifice for a child he did not even know. There are sacrifices, and then there are ones that don’t seem to fit what you’ve got going on in your life already.

The only other major issue with season 3 so far is that none of the cases feel particularly shocking, and maybe we want to see the universes mixed up even more than they have. The late start for “Chicago Fire” this season has made it a little more difficult for all of the elements to pair up.
