‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3, episode 9 review: The mind of Grant Ward
Through most of Tuesday night’s new episode of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD,” we took a deep dive inside the mind of none other than Grant Ward. This is a man with a dark past, some complicated mentors, and a goal to destroy SHIELD once and for all and then some.
So what happened to him on Tuesday night’s new episode can be best described as follows: The guy really wanted to flex his muscles and try to prove to everyone how awesome he is. Also, they want to make it back to the same world that Simmons was stationed on. Gideon Malick once again had a role in all of this, and the opposition to the plan was scant.
If there is any way to stop this plan now, SHIELD is going to have to rely on just a pair of operatives: Coulson and Fitz. They are the two in the other world who can shut this down, and in the process, maybe we’re going to get a chance to see them find Will and save him in the process. Given that this is the big emotional pull right now for Simmons as she wrestles with her past and present, this remains a very fascinating story to explore further.
If we are to look at this episode as a whole, it feels almost incomplete to analyze for so many reasons. While we can praise it for its writing (the Chloe Bennet scenes tonight were pretty fantastic), much of the story, other than the end of Rosalind Price, felt like obvious setup for what is coming next week on the alien world. Therefore, we almost wish that this was more of a two-hour event than something that we have to wait to get further information on. Grade: B-.
