‘Once Upon a Time’ co-creators heading to a scary summer camp with ABC Family
Just in case Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis were not busy enough with “Once Upon a Time,” the prolific showrunners are now teaming with one of their writers in Ian Goldberg on a new project that could bring a little bit of fright to the network for the first time really since the short-lived “Pretty Little Liars” spin-off “Ravenswood.”
ABC Family (which will become Freeform early next year) has officially given a series order to “Dead of Summer,” a series that seems like it will be a combination of “Scream,” “Teen Wolf,” and “Wet Hot American Summer.” Here is the show’s official logline:
“Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story, Dead of Summer is a bold, new series that mixes genres as it examines the light and dark of a summer like no other.”
We like the base premise of the series, and it is smart for Freeform to load up on some new series now with “Pretty Little Liars” nearing its twilight era on TV (no, we’re not talking about the book). The network is already picking up The Mortal Instruments adaptation “Shadowhunters,” which could be their next smash hit when it premieres next year.
It is a little too early to tell when this show will come on the air, but it would obviously be smart to air it in the summer.
