‘Chicago PD’ season 3, episode 9 review: Roman shoots an unarmed man

Chicago PDWhile love is in the air for a lot of people on “Chicago PD” season 3 (even Trudy may be getting a marriage proposal soon), Atwater is getting himself in serious trouble. On the last episode we saw that he has gotten in good with the Captain and even did a favor for him by helping let his son Nathan off the hook, but when he gets arrested a second time we thought that Atwater wouldn’t let it go. Instead it looks like Atwater is going to help this kid again. How much is Atwater really willing to put on the line for the Captain?

As much as we were hoping to get more on Atwaters story this week, instead we got an episode that was focused on Roman. Now that Andrew has passed his mom, Callie,  is dealing with his crazy father, Richie, coming over to her house drunk and scaring her. Roman doesn’t think that a restraining order was going to be enough and charges out of her house to find him and put a stop to the harassment, but Burgess convinces Roman to go back and talk to Trudy before doing anything.

When they get back to the station Trudy reveals that she found a book of engagement rings in her boyfriends car and is excited that he may be proposing, so when Roman asks if he can spend the rest of his shift hunting Andrew’s father down, she says yes in her happy delirium. When Roman finds him and threatens to lock him up if he doesn’t get on the next bus out of town, and Burgess serves him with a restraining order on top of it all. He says he’s ready to leave town, but after they leave he goes over to Callie’s house and beats her. When Roman and Burgess show up, Burgess calls for an ambulance while Roman runs off to find Richie. When he finds him, Richie reaches for what Roman thinks is a gun, so he shoots Richie only to later learn that the “gun” was really a cell phone.

Roman hasn’t always had the best storyline (or really much of any storyline), so this has been refreshing this season. He has always been a bit of an enigma, wrapped up in a clean cut officer, so a story like this that has him facing the fact that he shot and killed an unarmed man is going to be a juicy storyline for him. Episode grade: B
