NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Barrett Baber, Nadjah Nicole, Morgan Frazier perform for Blake Shelton
Blake Shelton’s team on “The Voice” is really not bringing it when it comes to variety compared to some of the others out there. Out of the six artists that he has, four of them are strictly country-based, and it is certainly possible that the entirety of his team could be country artists when the semifinals start next week.
Should that be the case? That’s what we are going to figure out over the course of this show! Be sure to check back live for more as we progress deeper into the night.
Ivonne Acero, “One Of Us” – Did this establish Ivonne as one of the contenders? We’re not saying that, but this was a notable improvement over what she’s done so far. She has gotten better and better every time we’ve seen her, and given that she’s still in high school, there’s a lot of room to improve. We’re just not sure if there is time for her.
Morgan Frazier, “Lips of an Angel” – Did the country version of the Hinder song satisfy? We like it far more than the original version, and we appreciate that she hit most of the notes and really tried to make the most of what we think of sometimes as questionable lyrical content.
Zach Seabaugh, “Brand New Girlfriend” – Was this the moment for Zach to emerge? Eh, not so much. This was just corny honky-tonk that you can get at many bars out there. Blake did him no favors with the song choice, and as we feared, this sounded extremely karaoke.
Nadjah Nicole, “Upside Down” – It’s nice that Nadjah is back, but was this the right song? We don’t think so. Why bring her back to saddle her with something so dated? With Blake and his country fans, she needed a home run to have a chance at returning. This barely got her on a base.
Emily Ann Roberts, “In the Garden” – Is it smart to perform a gospel song at this stage? Usually. This may not have been our favorite performance of the night, but it was still brilliant. It will scoop up a ton of votes from the older audience, and we feel like it is a guarantee that she will be back for another week.
Barrett Baber, “I Drive Your Truck” – Is this country song up the alley of his fans?
