‘Chicago Fire’ renewed for season 5, ‘Chicago PD’ for season 4

Chicago -

NBC clearly is having no problem right now handing out renewals like they are candy on Halloween night. (Or, to make a more timely reference, candy at a grocery store after Halloween when it is 90% off.)

Today, the network not only renewed “Blindspot” as previously announced, but also picked up “Chicago Fire” for a fifth season and “Chicago PD” for a fourth. Neither renewal should be a surprise in theory, given that they both are solid contributors to the NBC schedule, and they are produced in-house by Dick Wolf. When you’ve got the history with a network that Wolf does with NBC, that buys you a lot of faith.

The surprise here is that the two shows are not even done with the first half of their current seasons. While they would’ve been renewed anyway come April or May, we feel like with these early pickups right now NBC is more than likely try to send some sort of specific message to their audience: They don’t want you to sweat as much on the fate of some of their shows. In getting the renewal out of the way early, maybe it gives you incentive to keep watching rather than reason to fear that it is not worth diving into.

“Chicago Med,” which is also pictured above, will be premiering later this month. It could take a little bit of time before its future is determined. We’ll probably have some time to figure out its future in due time.
