‘Arrow’ season 4, episode 5 reaction: Has stance on Constantine’s future changed?

Constantine -Wednesday night’s new episode of “Arrow” was awesome, and for so many reasons. It was great first and foremost to have a chance to see a character like John Constantine in this world, and to see a little of how he knows Oliver Queen, and how he could be useful in the resurrection of Sara Lance.

Of course, it is more or less a given that fans would like to see Matt Ryan again in this role, but nothing seems to be forthcoming in the near future. Speaking to Deadline, executive producer Marc Guggenheim continues to insist that this was simply a “one-off,” and given Ryan’s stage commitments at the moment in New York, we have a hard time envisioning him being able to come back to do this role in the first place even if there was another part for him to play.

Guggenheim also made his thoughts known in the interview about why the “Constantine” show on NBC was canceled in the first place:

“There’s so much television out there, there’s so much content between network, cable, and streaming, that it’s very, very hard to make a noise in this environment. I’m sure that their Friday nighttime slot didn’t do them any favors either. But there’s so many wonderful shows that just don’t find an audience and they have nothing to do with quality.”

We’re going to hold out hope that something more can happen for the Contantine character somewhere, mostly because we love Ryan’s work and feel like there are so many interesting things that can come out of this world. Time will tell just what this particular future holds…
