Ratings: ‘Supergirl’ sinks without ‘The Big Bang Theory’; ‘Gotham,’ ‘Jane the Virgin’ rise

Supergirl -

It was easy to see a certain amount of writing on the wall for “Supergirl” on CBS. Premieres typically fall going into their second episode, and this can be said even more so for a premiere that follows “The Big Bang Theory,” one of the biggest scripted hits out there.

We’ll get more into specifics on the fall of “Supergirl” in a moment, as we like to start these ratings articles on a little bit more of a high note.

Winners – Cheers to “Gotham” first and foremost, who scored a 1.6 despite airing in full against “Supergirl.” For two weeks, this show has been outstanding in showing that it is not afraid of a certain Kryptonian. It’s also a testament to how good “Gotham” has been so far this season.

Also, “Dancing with the Stars” (2.0) improved versus its previous episode, but it may decline thanks to there being some preemptions in select markets. When we first saw improvement for “Crazy Ex Girlfriend” (0.3) and “Jane the Virgin” (0.4), we actually thought that there was a preemption over there, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Losers – Is “Supergirl” starting to lose its ability to fly? Specifically, the show dropped more than 30% in its second week to a 2.2 rating with out it’s “Big Bang Theory” lead in. Was this is a show that most of the premiere audience was watching out of curiosity? We feel like the leveling-off point for the season is probably somewhere a 1.8, which is good enough to get the show renewed, but it’s not really that much better than “The Flash” over on The CW. The only other show to drop in the demo numbers is also one on CBS in “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.2).
