‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7 spoilers: A further look into Stefan, Caroline’s future

Thanks to the flash-forwards that have been prevalent so far through the seventh season of “The Vampire Diaries,” we are very well aware of the fact that Stefan and Caroline are no longer a couple. Not only that, but apparently she does not want anything to do with him.

So what could have caused this sort of divide? We cannot speak to that, but we do at least have some further clues when it comes to how these two end up eventually growing apart. Speaking on the matter to TVLine, executive producer Caroline Dries passed along the following message:

“Valerie is part of the reason, but it’s a much bigger, more emotional, legit reason … It’s beyond petty jealousy or Stefan cheating on Caroline or anything like that … This season is about [our characters] growing up and becoming adults … [Stefan almost having a child in the past is] something he will be really be thinking about as we move forward in the season. He’ll keep thinking, ‘I could have been a dad.’ We had many ideas [for their backstory], but we felt this was the most symbolic and thematic.”

We definitely understand that there are many fans of Stefan and Caroline out there who could be potentially upset by the idea of him not ending up with her, and while we cannot offer you any evidence that the two are going to be together in the long-term, we can at least give you this: Just because they are not together in the flash-forwards. Does not mean that hope is gone. It just means that Stefan may have to work harder to get her back, and the same goes for her … provided that the longing is somewhere in there.
