‘Arrow’ season 4, episode 5 spoilers: Matt Ryan on John Constantine’s return

Constantine -Sure, the prospect of Sara Lance being back to her old self on “Arrow” season 4 is exciting, but we know that this is not the primary reason that we are most excited to see Wednesday night’s new episode “Haunted.” Instead, it’s all about the appearance of Matt Ryan as John Constantine.

While this appearance is meant to only be a one-off, we know already that there are a contingent of people who would love to see the show air on The CW after its brief one-season stint on NBC. Heck, “Constantine” executive producer Daniel Cerone is doing what he can to encourage all the Hellblazers out there to watch to boost “Arrow” ratings enough to make executives think about it.

So what was the experience like for Ryan going into this world, and did he have to change himself to make it happen? Speaking in a new interview with Variety, he explained that taking this character into a different universe was a mixture of things old and new:

“There are certain things he’s doing, like picking up a sword and fighting with it, that are slightly different. And there was a period of adjustment as well, when I first put on the trenchcoat again. The first take I thought, ‘What am I doing?’ But after a while it was like, ‘Ah, there he is. There’s the posture. There’s the physicality of him.’ What’s great about that episode is that John comes into this ‘Arrow’ world, and everyone doesn’t believe, or doesn’t know about, these occult worlds beyond ours, and John’s just like, ‘Look, this is the way sh— is.’ And he’s an arrogant bastard as well, so everyone’s a bit thrown off by him.”

Our translation to all of this is simple: It’s going to be tremendous. You’re bringing a fascinating and fully-formed character into this world, and then allowing things to play out in fascinating fashion as other characters get to know him.

We imagine we’ll have more on this guest spot very soon, but for now head over here to get some other TV news on everything we cover, including some exclusive teasers, sent right to you via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: NBC.)
