‘Scorpion’ season 2, episode 7 review: Ralph is back in a runaway subway caper!
The last episode of “Scorpion” season 2 was a lot of fun and made us feel like we were watching a modern day “Die Hard”, but there was one aspect of the episode that is still haunting us – Walter risking Toby’s life without his approval. We get that Walter has a disconnect when it comes to other people’s feelings, but he has never not cared about someone’s life being in danger, so this was really off-putting to us.
We thought that Toby might’ve still had some raw feelings about Walter trying to kill him, but it seems that we are the only ones that are still raw about it. Instead, Toby is in the ring having his very first fight and everyone is there to watch… everyone but Happy. It’s probably a good thing she wasn’t there because he got his butt handed to him after infuriating the opponent. When Toby overhears Happy making plans to meet with Chet, he decides to follow them so he can see her happy with him and move on. Chet turns out to be the host at a comedy club, and Happy is doing an open mic night, she’s actually not dating anyone. She’s terrible at it and Toby realizes that Happy is doing this to replace what she had with him like he was doing with boxing.
Paige and Ralph head to a science event on the subway, but the train has been tampered with and speeds out of control. What was great about this whole situation is that we finally got some Ralph action as he comes up with ways to help save them (along with the scorpion team of course). He’s been missing in action for most of this season, which has been very weird since the exchange is supposed to be the team “helps Paige understand her genius son” for her help, but Ralph’s barely around. Walter jumps on the speeding train like he’s James Bond and finds that the only way he can save everyone is to put them into the other car of the train and disengage the main car… with him in it! It’s crazy dangerous and means almost certain death, but it was something that we needed to see after leaving Toby for dead last week. Once everyone is safe, Paige smacks Walter in the face for being so reckless with his own life when there are so many people that depend on him and that love him.
We learned a little more about Ray tonight too. He was a fire fighter and has a picture of himself and a man named Danny in his camper as well as a medal. When Walter asks about it, Ray gets very serious for the first time and doesn’t want to talk about it. Is he hiding his pain with humor? Walter later tries to push the subject of the medal, and Ray says that it belonged to Danny who was more then a friend – he and his wife were an adoptive family for Ray. During a fire, Ray tried to save him, but Danny died and Ray has never forgave himself for it. He was supposed to give the medal to Danny’s wife and son, but he couldn’t face them and never saw them again.
There were a lot of great moments tonight. Paige and Walter had a moment where he realized that he no longer wants to keep his distance from her anymore (now he just needs to tell her that), Toby saw that Happy isn’t over him and we had a lot of Ralph tonight which we love. This show has really found it’s stride this season and we are hooked. Episode grade: A-
