Ricky Gervais returning to host 2016 Golden Globes

Globes -

It’s the news that many celebrities out there probably are terrified to hear: Ricky Gervais is coming back as the host of the Golden Globes for 2016.

The news was announced today in a statement by NBC, as programming head Robert Greenblatt had the following to say:

“We’re excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way … Fasten your seats belts.”

We imagine that the reaction to this news is going to be very much mixed. Some out there absolutely love Ricky’s humor, which is brash, opinionated, and at times offensive to some. Yet, this is the reason why others love him. He turned the awards-show at times into a roast, openly mocking Mel Gibson one year while also making fun of “The Tourist” right to Johnny Depp’s face. There are certainly some out there who probably feel like the Globes are better suited for a host who is a little bit lighter on the stars … though we must admit as someone who writes about TV for a living, Ricky gives us a lot of material.

Gervais’ return comes after Tina Fey and Amy Poehler won mostly-positive reviews for their stint hosting the show. They came aboard with a lot of chemistry from their “Saturday Night Live” days and were extremely funny. Really, we had sympathy for anyone who followed them up, but Ricky at least should be up for the challenge.

The 2016 Golden Globes are going to be coming your way on January 10, but before that happens, we’re going to be making our dream TV ballot, plus analyzing all of the individual categories. The link here is going to be the right place to go for most of that.
