‘Sherlock’ season 4: Christmas Special to get theatrical release in China

Sherlock season 3For those of you who really want to watch the “Sherlock” Christmas Special on the big screen, the good news is that you are going to have a chance to … provided that you are in China.

It was announced today that as a compliment to its airing around the world, the upcoming special (which is not really Christmas-related, but will air on the day presumably in Britain) will screen in a wide array of theaters in the country. “Sherlock” is extremely popular in China surprisingly, which makes the move make a whole lot of sense. The idea does have to be approved by the government, but we don’t think that there is anything in the Benedict Cumberbatch – Martin Freeman series that would be thought of as particularly offensive.

There is no firm premiere date just yet for the upcoming special in America, but our feeling is that it will run on PBS before the end of the year. The network has so many other programs coming in 2016, we’re not sure that there would be room for it then.

As for the upcoming fourth season in general, we know that Cumberbatch and Freeman are going to be filming it within the new year, with us currently projecting the premiere date to be at some point in late 2016. We are still a long ways away from there being some more news out there about the show, so we’ll just have to check back in with that.
