‘Switched at Birth’ renewed for season 5 prior to season 4 finale

For all of you out there who were worried that “Switched at Birth” had not been renewed just yet for a fifth season, we come today bearing great news: The show renewal is official! It will be returning next year when ABC Family completely undergoes the change to Freeform, and that means a chance to say where Bay, Daphne, and the rest of the characters go moving forward.

In a statement today, the network’s executive vice-president of programming and development Karey Burke had the following to say:

“Every season ’Switched at Birth’ continues to deliver fresh, relatable storylines that tackle important social issues, reflecting what our audience experiences daily … We’re excited to see where [creator] Lizzy [Weiss] will take these characters next.”

The fourth season is coming to an end on Monday night, and we feel like the fifth season will give people an opportunity to see some further growth and development from many of these characters. While you have a new name for the network, we don’t expect much to change for this show. One of the reasons why it has become so popular over the years is because it is a show that continues to be ground-breaking and revolutionary. There are no other programs out there that try as hard to portray the deaf community as they are, and take a wide array of storytelling risks in the process.

We are going to have some other news very soon when it comes to the “Switched at Birth” finale on Monday night, so be sure to stick around for some more scoop when it comes to that.
