‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12, episode 5 preview: Alex confronts Meredith after Penny reveal
There is clearly something wrong with Meredith on Thursday night’s new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” and it makes a whole lot of sense that Alex would be there to call her out on it. He’s worked with her for twelve seasons now, and understands when something is a little off about her. From the moment that Penny arrives, he realizes that she starts to act differently. She avoids saying hello, occupies her time doing other activities, and in his words, seems to be acting as though she is in a “hostage” situation.
Is Meredith ever going to reveal to anyone her problem? Obviously, we know it: Penny is the doctor whose mistakes caused Derek to die last season, and we feel like the moment she realizes exactly who Meredith is, she is going to feel just as awkward as Meredith does, if not more so. That’s what makes this particular situation so interesting: Neither character is necessarily doing anything wrong. They are both just trying to move forward, and Penny attending a dinner party doesn’t mean she has forgotten about Derek at all. So much time has passed within the world of the show.
So could her relationship with Callie be impacted in any way by this reveal? It’s possible, but not altogether likely since all doctors make mistakes. The only issue we could see happening here is if Penny was dishonest at some point about it, or if she tries to diminish the impact of how she messed up and cost Derek his life.
At some point in this episode, we expect the conversations to happen. They have to. Otherwise, what is the point of having this episode?
