Oscars 2016: Chris Rock in talks to finally return
It feels like for almost every year since he first hosted the Academy Awards, Chris Rock has had his name in contention to return to the gig. However, this may be the year that he finally comes back.
According to Variety, Rock is in talks to take the hosting gig for the 2016 show on February 28, which would be over 10 years from when he first did the job in 2005. It’s not official yet, but we figure that his name wouldn’t be coming out unless the odds of it happening were pretty high.
Are we down for another hosting appearance from Chris? Definitely, and mostly because it feels like the Oscars really haven’t done that well with other recent hosts. Seth MacFarlane was a little too offensive for some, Billy Crystal was somewhat boring in his last effort, and by the time Neil Patrick Harris got the gig, he didn’t have much room to surprise anyone anymore. Ellen DeGeneres did a fairly good job the last time she did it, but we remember Rock being edgy, funny, and unique in the job. One of our favorite bits from his first time hosting was when he interviewed people on the street about some of the nominees; many of them had not seen the nominees, but they had seen “White Chicks” and thought that it was pretty great.
In the end, we’re glad to see Chris back in the mix. While it would be cool to see some first-time hosts for the Oscars (Seth Meyers or Kate McKinnon, anyone), we remember him fondly enough and this is probably the hardest hosting job in Hollywood.
