‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 spoilers: Meredith’s face says it all about Penny

We were starting to almost think that “Grey’s Anatomy” really could be sticking to this whole claim of a lighter tone and some happier stories on the twelfth season … and of course, we’re now kicking ourselves for doing so. How many times do we have to fall for this particular trick?

The photo above is one of the first released for next week’s episode “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and it is pretty clear that this is not going to be a fun party for Meredith Grey. Ellen Pompeo’s character has learned that Callie’s new girlfriend is none other than Penny, the woman responsible for making the wrong move that cost Derek her life. Meredith told her that this is something that she was going to have to learn from, and that Derek’s death will continue to haunt her for many years to come. When she said that, we have a feeling that she did not think she would be seeing her again at any point in the near future.

Obviously, we don’t think Penny is out to cause any pain here, and this just seems to be an unhappy coincidence. Is Meredith going to be able to handle this, or is it better if all parties involve just realize that this is a bad move and cut bait on it? At the moment, we’re stating to think that the latter is the right move. Even if everyone is especially well-intentioned at this particular dinner gathering, that doesn’t make anything that much better.
