‘Empire’ season 2: Lee Daniels explains Cookie’s Jennifer Lopez comment

Empire -

Yes, this is where we are now in the present “age of outrage”: Content creators having to explain comments that fictional characters made on TV shows. It sounds completely nutty, but yet that is what is happening now with “Empire” in particular.

Here is a brief summation of what’s happened: In this past episode (read our review over here), Taraji P. Henson’s character of Cookie Lyon made a comment about Jennifer Lopez’s singing abilities that the internet then interpreted to mean that either Daniels, the writers, or Henson herself actually felt like Lopez was not particularly talented at her craft. Then, of course, some people got offended and such. It’s social media.

Anyhow, as a result of all of this Daniels eventually posted a photo of himself alongside her in a post on Instagram, and made it clear that if she was ever interested in being on the show, it would almost certainly happen:

“I talk to Jennifer all the time about being on Empire. We’d be lucky to have her. She’s proven herself as an original: one of the best singers, dancers and actors of all time. Look sometimes, Cookie just says some stupid s**t.”

We will say this in defense of Lopez: While we have heard many performances that feel like they have benefited from backing tracks and all of that, we have also heard a number of performances that show that she does have some serious vocal pipes. It is something that we would actually like to see her commit to a little more at some point in the future.

Anyway, we will just have to take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to whether or not J.Lo will ever surface on “Empire” season 2, if for no other reason than that there are already dozens of other big names that have signed up. For now, this remains the show that everyone wants to be in some way a part of.
