Nicki Minaj will produce, appear in new ABC Family comedy about life

ABC Family -

Here is certainly some news that we did not see coming today: Nicki Minaj is coming to television! Not only that, but it is technically family television. Then again, ABC Family (the network we’re talking about here) is trying to appeal more to young adults, and she certainly has that audience in spades.

Anyway, the announcement came out earlier Tuesday that the rapper is set to executive-produce and make appearances in an upcoming ABC Family comedy that will be sit in the 1990’s, and help to show the unique circumstances that led to her becoming an international star. There is a serious air of authenticity to this show, which is actually going to film its pilot in Queens, where Minaj grew up and prepared for her rise.

In a statement, she had the following to say about the experience so far:

“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on … I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”

For those wondering, Kate Angelo (“Will & Grace”) is responsible for writing the pilot, and joining Minaj as executive producers are Aaron Kaplan (“Chasing Life,” another ABC Family show), Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher, and also Gee Roberson.

Will this concept work? Right now, we would argue that the jury is still out? “Seinfeld” is obviously the template for the semi-autobiographical comedy series, but we feel like this will stick a little more truthfully to who Nicki was. It’s also single-camera, so don’t expect much of a laugh track or the same sets used time and time again because there’s no time to build something else.

We will give you some more insight on this show as we start to know more, so be on the lookout now for further news! You can also head over here in the event you want some further TV news sent right over to you via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: ABC Family.)
