‘The X Factor’ UK review: Menn on Point, Sherilyn Hamilton Shaw, Anton Banaghan perform
We are starting to near the end of “The X Factor” UK’s auditions this year, and this unfortunately means that the pressure was on the contestants in this episode to really come through and deliver something great. For the most part, though, we were impressed with the crop tonight for a number of reasons. There were a few genuinely great singers, but then also some who were just good performers. That is equally important at this point.
Kerrie-Anne Phillips – We dug her audition, but wish we didn’t have the whole “I lost my job for the show” narrative going into it. We don’t really need to feel guilty in order to start liking someone who we feel is talented on her own.
Lucy Duffield – Tremendous range, and while she has performed in front of Nick Grimshaw before in a group, we don’t really care about that. What we just need to see from her moving forward is even more big personality, since she is someone worth watching this season.
Nige and Kay – A very sweet duo. We previewed them leading into this weekend’s episode, and for the most part found them rather fun. We don’t think that they are necessarily destined to be on the show for a long time, but they are people we root for.
The Shures – We don’t see many married gay performers on the show even in auditions, so this was a lot of fun. We didn’t necessarily think that they were equally great, so we’re not sure we will see any of them after the six-chair challenge.
Anton Banaghan – He is one of those boys this season who, if he can keep his performance quality level around the same, could be in the running this season for a long time. He is a rather good performer, and while he needs more power in his voice, he has a nature charm on stage.
Joseph McCall – The funny thing about Joseph can really sing! He just needs the right song, and the right person who tells him to stop acting like he’s spent his entire career performing in bars.
Menn on Point – We did not understand a single thing that they said, but the thing here is that they were really fun! That has to count for something, right? They at least were genuine entertainers, and we could see their original song being on the radio somewhere.
Sherilyn Hamilton Shaw – At this point, Sherilyn has to be thought of as one of the best singers in her category. Not only is she strong vocally, but she commands the stage well and emotionally connected to “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” in a way that few others do when it comes to a Whitney Houston song on this show.
