Jimmy Fallon on a surprising Justin Bieber – ‘Tonight Show’ change-up

Tonight Show -

For those of you who are as interested in some of the behind-the-scenes workings of a late-night talk show as we are, we figure that you will probably appreciate the following story in regards to Justin Bieber and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

You know some of those crazy sketches that celebrities do on the show from time to time, the ones that end up getting millions of hits via YouTube and social media? Well, those are planned long in advance when talent is booked for the show, and everyone has to rehearse and prepare them. It takes a lot more work than the standard late-night interview, which is why it probably has to be really disappointing when the rug is pulled out from under you on something at the last minute

This is precisely what happened with Fallon when it comes to Justin Bieber’s recent appearance; he was meant to perform new song “What Do You Mean,” but there was also a fun sketch planned that was scrapped at the last minute after either Bieber or his camp decided that they weren’t into it. This is a process that Fallon lamented in part in a new Billboard cover story, but in true Jimmy fashion also kept things in perspective and didn’t bad-mouth the singer too much:

“I mean, I wish they’d told me weeks ago because today’s the day, and now we have to crunch and think of an idea to do. And I have to apologize to the crew guys who built the set and the wardrobe people and everyone. But it’s not what he does. He’s here to sing, so as long as he’s comfortable and it sounds good then we did our job. And if I talk to him and make him funny and make him look good, that’s my job. That’s all I have to do.”
