ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 spoilers: Is an Esposito love triangle in the cards?

There are not too many single characters to play with on “Castle” anymore when it comes to romance … at least of those in the precinct. Castle and Beckett are married and that doesn’t seem to be changing, and Ryan is still with Jenny. Esposito has had an on-again, off-again relationship with Lanie over the past few years, but at the moment it feels almost like things are in the “off” position.

Is it possible that these two get back together? Well, at the moment it looks almost like Espo could have eyes for new arrival Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye) … at least based on Jon Huertas’ recent comments on the subject to TV Guide:

“She is pretty cute, and I think Esposito has noticed that for sure. He’s admiring the scenery right now … Lanie hasn’t necessarily noticed, but … a triangle is a huge possibility and something I think we’re definitely going to see this season.”

New co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter was pretty coy on the subject of Esposito and Hayley, but he did make it clear that he doesn’t want to revisit the Esposito / Lanie well unless there is a new story worth telling:

“There’s always a chance that might come back, but we’ve been down that road a few times. So it’s just a matter of, ‘What’s the honest version of that story?’ so we’re not just throwing them together to throw them together. They’ve had a beginning, middle and end, so what’s the next step for them? Is there a next step?”
