‘Dancing with the Stars 21’ spotlight: Will Alexa PenaVega, Mark Ballas spy a win?
At one point, Alexa PenaVega is someone who dominated kids’ television. We remember her everywhere when the “Spy Kids” movies were a hit, so we’re sure that for a certain generation, she is one of the more well-known people on “Dancing with the Stars” season 21.
So what is the challenge for her this season? It’s probably working to tap into some of that nostalgia, and also appeal herself to some people who are not that familiar with her. She’s not one of the most well-known stars this season beyond that generation, but she does have a popular pro and that will probably help her overcome some early hurdles.
Name – Alexa PenaVega (previously Alexa Vega)
Age – 27
Claim to fame – Star of the “Spy Kids” film franchise alongside Daryl Sabara, and has since gone on to do a variety of other movies and TV shows. She was a part of the recent “Machete Kills,” and had a short arc on the now-canceled CW series “The Tomorrow People.” She’s also married to fellow contestant / Big Time Rush singer Carlos PenaVega.
Partner – Mark Ballas. In the earlier seasons we were admittedly not that much of a Mark fan, but we have to say that we’ve really enjoyed his work the past few years in particular. We feel like he had so much fun working with Willow Shields last season, and some of his concepts and choreography were among the most interesting and daring we’ve seen in some time.
Strengths – Alexa’s probably going to be rather good at this. She’s used to performing, has probably been able to prepare for this well, and we feel like competing against her husband is also going to be motivation for her to try to beat him for bragging rights in the household. They’re probably going to have a fun competition out of this in a way that ice-dancing partners Charlie White and Meryl Davis did.
Weaknesses – On the flip side, Alexa will have to figure out how to convince those in the 40+ demographic to vote for her, who really may not have any clue who she is. They are the majority of the audience who actually votes, and we could see her easily being one of the sort of dancers who lasts for a while based on scores, and then is eliminated suddenly after an off week.
Prediction – Do we think Alexa is going to win? Probably not, but there is zero reason to think that she is going to be in danger in the early going. She’s just got too much going for her, and the gimmick of competing against her husband is probably something that people want to see for a while.
