‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 17: Joe Biden gives away Benson spoiler during speech

It is always difficult when you are a hit drama to keep things under wraps … but typically, you don’t have to worry so much about the Vice-President giving away spoilers of all people.

However, this is what happened as seen in the Vine video HERE, posted by the writers of “Law & Order: SVU.” Earlier Thursday, star Mariska Hargitay was in attendance for an important event in which the Department of Juice announced further steps and financial contributions to help clear the massive rape kit backlog that is in some ways keeping justice from being sought in many clear cases. It is an important subject, and there’s a great story over at NBC News where you can read a little bit more about it.

At one point during the event, Biden gave a speech that included him mentioning that Benson officially has a promotion now to Lieutenant. This was not meant to be public knowledge just yet, and while we’re sure that some out there with the show are slightly bummed that it’s leaked, it is pretty cool that it was the Vice-President of the United States who did the leaking. Just him knowing about your show and acknowledging it is something you can be proud of.

Ultimately on the show, this promotion will allow Benson to continue to do important work to help those who need it most. In real life, Mariska is also continuing to do the same thing, and working to clear the backlog is a part of that.

The new season of “SVU” will premiere with a two-hour episode on Wednesday, September 23.
