‘Outlander’ season 1, episode 2 review: Will Claire get back to Inverness or be held prisoner?

After last week’s stunning premiere of “Outlander” we have high hopes for the rest of the season, but with the bar set so high are they really going to be able to keep up this sort of pace? We think they can and with that we are ready to jump into episode two. With such a strong story set up in the premiere for Claire, we are already worried about her being brought to Castle Leoch and separated permanently from her husband Frank.

After arriving at Castle Leoch, Claire is worried about Jamie’s injuries and with her back ground as a nurse, she knows how to help him. When Jamie takes off his shirt, Claire sees the scars on his back and learns more about their history with the redcoats, specifically his history with Black Jack Randall. He tells her of Black Jack Randall doing unspeakable things to his sister and then him being flogged for trying to protect her.

After taking care of Jamie’s injuries, Claire is presented to Colum MacKenzie, who is immediately suspicious of her being an English spy. Not a good start for Claire. he promises her transport back to Inverness in a few days, but when that time comes, Colum decides to keep her against her will as their healer after seeing how she helped Jamie.

It is easy to see that there is chemistry between Claire and Jamie, but with her husband still out there, we like to think she will try to stay true to him. We understand her telling Jamie that her “husband is dead” is fairly accurate in this time in place (more so that her husband hasn’t even been born yet), but at this point she knows that there may be a way to get back to him and her time. Episode grade: B
