ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5 spoilers: What’s next for Jake Ballard?

“Scandal” is a show that thrives in its wide array of twists and turns, and we certainly don’t see that changing anytime soon now that we’re entering the fifth season. Just look at what sort of position the show is in at the moment: Olivia and Fitz are now seemingly more together than ever before, Mellie has been sent away, and Elizabeth North has taken over for Cyrus. There are sweeping changes coming up, and that is without even really getting into some stories (including that of Jake Ballard).

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Shonda Rhimes claims that there are some huge events coming up still for Jake; specifically, Scott Foley’s character could go “on a journey that might destroy everything.”

There is pretty clearly a motive for things to start to go a little bit haywire when it comes to Jake, and we just have to begin here with the sole fact that he doesn’t have Olivia, and we know what sort of feelings were there. It really was not that long ago that they were far away from the world enjoying one another’s company; it was a paradise for them, but in some ways it was an impossible reality.

Even away from Olivia, Jake has been tormented by B613 and Rowan for so long that we have a hard time thinking that he is going to be able to get over that anytime soon. This is going to be a trying season ahead for him, and we’re very interested in seeing what happens from here.
