‘Outlander’ star Sam Heughan, ‘Supergirl’s’ Melissa Benoist team for new drama ‘Oxford’

Jamie -Typically, we do not write much on CarterMatt about feature films, but when you have one that stars two familiar faces on TV who we’ve spent much of the past year discussing, it is easy to make an exception.

Per a report from Deadline, “Outlander” breakout star Sam Heughan and newly-minted “Supergirl” Melissa Benoist (otherwise known for “Glee” or “Whiplash”) have signed on to appear in “Oxford,” a film described as a romantic drama from writer Allison Burnett. There is no directly firmly announced at this time, but it is being produced through Screen Gems.

Story-wise, Benoist will play an American Rhodes Scholar in Oxford University who eventually develops feelings for Heughan’s character, a confident (perhaps overly so at times) teaching assistant who is in the midst of a cancer battle, and as a result is somewhat detached from others. Eventually, she learns the truth about his diagnosis, and upon this moment the two take advantage of the opportunity to live to the fullest.

Both Heughan and Benoist are going to be spending much of the next several months working on their respective shows. For Sam, he has already been at work on “Outlander” season 2 for much of the summer, and it will premiere on Starz more than likely in the spring. The new story will feature his character of Jamie Fraser in France alongside Claire (Caitriona Balfe), where a new array of challenges will await them. The story is based primarily on the Diana Gabaldon book Dragonfly in Amber.

Meanwhile, “Supergirl” will premiere on CBS come Monday, October 26; we’ve had an opportunity to see the pilot, and it serves as a strong foundation for a lot of tremendous super-powered storytelling to come.
