‘Hell on Wheels’ season 5, episode 5 preview: Cullen and Chang’s latest conversation

Are you ready to come aboard the latest “Hell on Wheels” preview article? In this one, we really are talking about trains first and foremost, and a scene featuring both Cullen Bohannon and Chang aboard one.

There are several reasons to enjoy the interactions between these two characters, beginning of course with their intelligence. Both are fiercely smart, shrewd, and capable of reading others incredibly well. They are also coming off of a massive crisis that nearly led to more bloodshed and a stoppage of the Chinese labor force.

To us, there are two clear standout moments within this video:

1. The talk of San Francisco, and Chang’s attempts to preserve the Chinese culture within Truckee to a certain extent. What you have to wonder is whether or not he is truly genuine. Is he saying this because he truly wants to preserve things for his people, or is he saying this because he wants to maintain his popularity, and it is a shrewd political ploy? Chang is a very intelligent man, and routinely manages to think well before he acts.

2. Cullen making it clear to Chang that the last person he should trust is Thor a.k.a. The Swede. Chang informs him (at least somewhat about the rice trade), and Cullen advises him to make The Swede a part of his past. In turn, Chang encourages Cullen to do the same thing. We all know that The Swede is up to no good; with his history, it’s impossible to think otherwise. The issue now comes down to one of timing, and when he is going to make his next power-move.
