ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 spoilers: Is Nathan Fillion’s Rick going back to P.I. work?

CastleWell, if you were looking for something to feel torn about when it comes to “Castle” season 8, we’ve got your very thing right now in the video below.

In this clip teasing upcoming episodes this fall, it makes it fairly clear that Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is going back into full-time work as a private investigator rather than as someone working with the NYPD. There’s some old footage in here, and at first we wondered if this was some sort of a mistake. However, there is also a reminder that the new season is starting “this fall” at the end, and the previous Castle P.I. story was in the winter. This is a promo for the new season, which means that we may not see Rick as much working at the NYPD. The difference this time is that he doesn’t seem to be banned from working there.

So why bring Castle back to this place, given that not everyone loved the story the first time? We feel like the main difference here is that in addition to solving crimes, the main reason he was a part of the NYPD was to study Beckett (Stana Katic), his muse for many of his cases. With her now being promoted to Captain, what’s the point of sticking around the force when she’s not going to be in the field as much?

If we were you, we wouldn’t worry too much about this change. Since Castle’s not banned from the NYPD in the way that he was last time, we imagine that his new job title will not prohibit him at all from working with Beckett, Ryan, Esposito, and others throughout the season. It should feel like a similar show; in a way, this may be beneficial for Castle in that he will not be forced to spend most of his time with a singular partner.
