‘Empire’ season 2 spoilers: Mariah Carey set to guest star

For all of those who started to think that “Empire” had already cast most of their big-name guest stars for the upcoming second season (we were starting to feel that way), now there is some more news coming out that is clearly throwing that out the window.

As announced by show executive producer Lee Daniels today at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Mariah Carey is going to guest-star on at least one upcoming season 2 episode of the show. This is Carey’s first appearance on a Fox primetime show since the whole “American Idol” debacle, though there is not much word yet as to if she will be playing herself or another superstar in the music business. For the most part, famous people have not come on the show to simply be some sort of exaggerated version of themselves, but within the music world.

Does “Empire” really need a star like Mariah to appear for ratings? No, and that is to an extent probably why she is turning up. This is really just another chance to add a little bit more dimension to the show, but they won’t necessarily have to rely on her to carry it. She can just be a fun part of the ensemble.

Given that the series is already several episodes into production, we don’t anticipate seeing Mariah in the early going unless she was able to go in and film a surprise cameo under the radar at some point over the past several weeks.
