‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ episodes to premiere all at once; ‘Outlander’ season 2 unlikely to get similar treatment

We are living more and more in the age of TV binge-watching, so we’re not altogether surprised that Starz is one of the first major premium networks to dip their toes in these waters.

While at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour today, network head Chris Albrecht confirmed that the entire upcoming third season of “Da Vinci’s Demons,” as well as the new drama “Flesh and Bone,” will be available instantly for fans to enjoy who subscribe to the network via their On-Demand service or Starz Play. That means there is no reason to worry about waiting for a solid week to figure out what happens next.

Is this going to be the new norm for the network? It’s unlikely. Albrecht confirmed that thanks to its lengthy production cycle, “Outlander” season 2 is not going to premiere in a similar way, and will continue to have an episode available a week. As far as we know, the same thing could be said for “Power” or some other shows.

We feel like for the most part, what is happening with “Da Vinci’s Demons” is more or less a special case, since the show was filmed a while back and it is in its final season. We don’t know enough about “Flesh and Bone” to have an opinion one way or another.

We continue to hold to our stance that we’re not the biggest binge-watching fan out there. While it may be convenient for people with a few hours to burn, it does take away the social environment of being able to go to work the next day and talk about what happened on the latest episode. Everyone is in different spots of the series since you watch at your own pace, and you don’t get a chance to savor each one individually. We say this as someone who watched all of “Arrested Development” over about a month and a half, and while we loved it, we barely remember any individual episode.
