Going into the premiere of “I Am Cait” on E!, we honestly had no idea how it was going to be received or what the popularity of the show would be. After all, there were a number of reasons to be so uncertain about this. Caitlyn Jenner’s story has already been fairly well-known at this point, in between the Vanity Fair cover and the ESPYs speech earlier this month. She has been fairly high-profile, at least in comparison to every other transgender person in America.
Yet, it turned out that tonight her docuseries proved itself to be at least a monster on social media, trending worldwide almost the entire time that it was on the air. We probably will not know the ratings until Tuesday, but we imagine that it far outshines some of Caitlyn’s former stomping ground in “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” We imagine that there are a few reasons why it would be such a success:
1. Uniqueness – There are still so few transgender stories out there, and Jenner is clearly the most high-profile person to have her own show.
2. Reviews – While the Kardashians are often loathed by many, most in the TV critic world have praised this show for its honesty and realness, even with a few over-the-top cameos.
3. Promotion – It has been known for months that this show was going to be on the air. Everyone was aware that it would be coming on. It even got a prime timeslot at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Given that this is just the beginning of this journey and the series, it is going to be rather curious to see just how much attention ultimately does follow the series week-to-week, especially once some of the initial hype quiets down.
