‘NCIS’ season 13 spoilers: Is Mike Franks returning?
Given how “NCIS” season 12 ended with Gibbs being shot, doesn’t it seem right that we begin season 13 with a blast from his past? We like to think so, which is why we are so happy with the news that Muse Watson is returning to the show.
Watson confirmed the news himself by sharing a photo of his dressing room, saying that he is “home” back on the set of the show. Obviously, his return is complicated ever so slightly by the fact that Mike Franks is technically dead and has been for years. However, the show has proven that there are some other ways to bring him back.
1. Flashbacks – Given his close relationship with Gibbs, it could be fruitful in the premiere to see some of their past, and how Franks helped encourage Gibbs to fight. In turn, this could help Mark Harmon’s character recover quicker from the shooting and prepare for the future.
2. Dream sequences – Technically, Franks could fill a similar role in the present, appearing to Gibbs in either a dream or some sort of alternate reality.
While filming on season 13 has begun, production is for the most part keeping other details under wraps, more than likely due to the Gibbs cliffhanger and the inability to give anything else away. We imagine that sooner or later, there will be a little bit more revealed. It may just take a little bit of time before we actually make it to that point later this summer. For the record, we’re still holding out a lot of hope he survives; having this show without Harmon would be awkward.

To repeat, of course Gibbs will not be killed off. I am glad Mike Franks is returning. I like Bishop’s husband and hope he will take a more active role. I hope the writers tweak their skills – there’s not enough of the bantering we enjoyed between DiNozzo and the female on the team. Having a new “probie” who is married is not working.

Bishop’s husband is far more intresting than his wife, and it only took a few episodes. They can’t do anything to improve the banter between Bishop and the guys. Chemistry between actors is either there or it’s not.

speaking of chemistry between actors! I can’t wait either! Who knew? Apparently an actor can force a TV show’s production to move from Vancouver to LA just for him, then he can quit the show a year later. And then, it turns out, eveyrone involved with the show can get over themselves.

If Gibbs is doing flashbacks, perfect time to bring Zebra back too, he was her Father figure. Also, now that Tony is seeing someone that could bring lots of ideas especially if she came back with a baby! ??? Tony’s ??? The ratings would blow through the roof!

Jesse Stern killed Franks off as part of a personal vendetta with Watson. Big mistake. Now they have to dig him up several episodes each years and though I like Franks, it becomes a bit more tiresome than just having a real, live character.

Not true. Stern was very opposed to killing off Franks, and has said that he did NOT want to do it. Besides, writers are not allowed to decide who dies. That’s strictly up to the show runner, in this case, Glasberg.

Well, I’m only repeating what was on Watson’s Twitter page. Stern was producing shows at the time and left abruptly right after. There was never any denial of it on Stern’s twitter as I was following them both pretty closely at the time.

I have followed Muse and Stern on Twitter for a long time. Watson is a seasoned professional. I have never seen him say a bad word against any specific person. Additionally, as a professional, he knows the writers are not responsible for killing him. Maybe more importantly Stern himself uses this as an example of writing a story he did not want to write.

Bringing Franks back to life in witness protection or as a twin brother would be jumping the shark even more embarrassingly than ghost Franks already is. It’s a stupid cliché plot device and it’s disappointing that the show has lost its former intelligence for this type of repetitive mawkish dreck. But alas – giving GIbbs drama, danger, and grief is all the show concerns itself with now. TPTB seem to have no other ideas that they actually care about. It’s a shame. Consequently the show has gotten very predictable and pretty bad. I don’t understand why they even keep the rest of the cast around. They matter so little now.

The worst decision ever to kill off Mike Franks. He was so much a part of that show. And he gave us another insight into Gibbs because of him being Gibbs’ Boss. Until they brought back the ‘ghost’ Mike, I was hoping it was all a horrible mistake – maybe Mike had a twin brother/cousin who was shot by mistake – and Mike could come back alive! I wish they could bring him back. We love him!

Love your theory, too, Kathie! It’s not the same w/o Gibbs. I’m not too worried though I wish Ziva would have appeared around the corner and shot that kid before he shot Gibbs! That would have been a nice returning moment for her. I would love to see her come back and claim Tony….and I mean BEFORE he marries that other broad!!!! That would be a bummer……………. :)

I love Muse. They could bring him back by producing a ‘twin’ brother, that worked for a different agency, like a ‘spook’ or something.
Sadly, Ziva is gone, but the writers have really fallen down the last two seasons. They need to either do better, or get new writers.

I like Kathie Nee’s idea of Franks not being dead at all and just in witness protection. However they bring back Muse Watson as Mike Franks will be wonderful as far as I am concerned. I love his character.

Love the witness protection idea! Bring Franks back full-time, my entire family adores that man. And for those whining about it being the “Gibbs show”, I hate to tell you, but it always has been and always will be the “Gibbs show”. The day he leaves, is the day it goes under. No one will watch without him. If the powers that be are smart, they’ll figure out how to bring Franks back to life. Gibbs and Franks are some of the best tv I’ve ever watched.

Do not know how many of you remember the old TV series, Dallas? Well, they killed off Bobby Ewing and the network suffered so much backlash it was pathetic. When the new season started it was all a bad dream by Bobby Ewing’s wife. Bobby was still in the show. So, stranger things have happened! Do not want to see Jethro killed off though. I would like to see Ziva return. Gibbs can have some recurring dreams about Mike Franks!

I’m happy to see Muse Watson return to NCIS, in whatever way works best for him and for the show. He is a very special man to me because he has established residency in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky.When he applied for his KY drivers license, he made the generous decision to become an organ donor! Because my son made a similar decision on his KY license, on 4/16/2010, his generosity became a reality. He saved the lives of 3 Kentuckians with his heart, liver and kidneys as well as giving 28 bone and tissue grafts which have gone out to many states and to the United Arab Emirates. Why not just have Gibbs open his eyes and have Mike’s death have been a nightmare? It’s a television show, folks, so the audience gets that it’s entertainment, not real life. Mike Franks and Jethro Gibbs formed the cornerstone of NCIS, then built upon by the other excellent cast members. Having Gibbs without Franks is removing part of the cornerstone and weakening the show. We haven’t been watching very often since they killed Franks off. Bad move.

I’m still banking on what GIbbs whispered into Mike’s daughter-in-law’s ear when he was “buried” … I’m hoping he told her he was put in the protection program and “was not in the box.” They certainly could resurrect him that way … other shows have done the same, and even worse! Heck, they could even bring back Shannon and Kelly … stranger things have happened. And, Gibbs WILL recover … it is not NCIS without LEROY! Oh, I’d like to Ziva turn up with Tony’s baby girl … that would change his roving eye forever! (Although, it is a good part of his endearing character.) Whatever, I’m a watcher until the end — LOVE THIS SHOW!

After Mike Franks was killed off, I actually watched the show a lot less. He was the best curmudgeon as well as the one person who spoke truth to power. A long time ago there was a TV show called “Nichols” and it starred James Garner (who also portrayed characters much like Muse Watson does). Garner’s sheriff character was killed off and his twin brother – Garner of course – came back to avenge his death. There are so many plot twists and inventions that could also bring Muse’s character back full time in some form. NCIS is VERY smart in bringing Muse back for the opener to the new season and I WILL be watching. Here’s hoping that the powers that be at the show will bring Muse back in some way shape or form. He is an actor worth watching.

I think it’s unfair to blame Emily Wickersham for the lack of depth in her character. The writers haven’t given her much of a chance to show off her talents. Give her more depth writers!!

That’s not on the writers cause they did their part & the actress has to do her part, which is to act out the script she’s been given! Who’s blaming her? The character was a stupid idea to begin wiht , and the writers can do nothign with her. She has had TWO FULL SEASONS to show her talents, she’s had episodes specially written to showcase the character, and the character is still flatter than Kansas. If she were a great actress, she might be able to elevate the script, as ALL of the other actors have managed to do for 12 years. However, she doesn’t have the chops. This experiment failed a long time ago. Time for a new actress who can keep up.

People with real connections have hinted/said it multiple times. After Cote’s departure in S11, CBS had asked her back for a guest appearances in S13 (around the end) under her condition. Those people have been fans of Cote so I doubt it’s some haters spreading lies but it is very telling that she didn’t appear in S13 although she said in various interviews she would be back for the right circumstances etc. And it’s also very telling that those people never said anything about it when it was clear she wouldn’t make an appearance.

It was said by someone named ‘Alice’ on that social network called ‘Tumblr’. I checked that. I asked around if she is reliable and many told me she has those connections for real and has shared Infos before. And even one Cote blog with connections has said that. I’m not even on Tumblr or Twitter but know about these things. But I’m not surprised by the comments regarding this. People these days just read/see what they want to.

I know Alice. She hinted that Cote had been asked back, then she recatned quickly. Not everything she says turns otu to be true. Soemimes even “connections” are just repeating rumors. I don’t read “what I want to”. I check things out. In any case, let’s say it’s true. Maybe she was asked to come back for a particular story, and maybe she didn’t like it. So what? She cares about he Ziva character, and I certainly wouldn’t expect her to come back for a story that ruins the character even further. It doesn’t mean she would NEVER come back.

Don’t know her name. All I know is that her experiences with Cote haven’t been too good, especilly regaring her source or connection. You said you haven’t seen or heard anything from what I said, later you said you know those people and admit they did say that (at least Alice you admited). You’re the reason why someone like me is suspicious when it comes to Cote. Because her die-hard fans lik you do everything to blame everyone (aka the network/Harmon) for her leaving but it doesn’t seem to come to your mind that Cote is probably not the victim in this mess and is like most other celebrities depending on any sort of attention from the media.

I have talked to Vicky at length, and her experiences with Cote have been very good indeed. I didn’t “admit” anything. I don’t consider Cote a “victim”. never should have killed Mike Franks off, fans let that be known and that is why they had to bring him back as a ghost. Off all the people who have left the show, Kate, Jenny Ziva, Mike Franks is the one I miss the most. Yes Mike will make Gibbs fight to live. We all know already that Mark Harmon has signed on for the new season so why are you still trying to keep it a secret?? Just glad I will get to see Mike Franks again hope he keeps showing up!!!!

I can only hope he is returning. I used to watch the show faithfully each week. I even had my alarm set so I wouldn’t miss it. I watched to see who would replace Ziva and I just don’t see chemistry between the blonde and the rest of the team so I was not a faithful watcher after that. I watched it intermittently and even missed the last show where Gibbs got shot which is a bummer because I understand Mike Franks made a cameo appearance in it as well as other characters who had been killed off. I love the Mike Franks character and will certainly be watching to see him. Hopefully he will be in more than the first episode.

Love when they bring Muse back; wish they did it more often. When you want to delve into what makes Gibbs tick as an agent, there’s your way to bring him in. I’d prefer more flashbacks (with fresh footage of course!) into their early relationship when it was NIS. The spirit/conscience thing is limited. Hopefully, this isn’t a final appearance of Muse and the character.

I agree with Jude Bumby. Mike Franks should come back alive. I’m an avid reader of mysteries and FBI series and it is easily done and believable. This ghost thing can be a bit overdone. Mike Franks was a huge part of the show. He added character and great talent not to mention how well he fit. He certainly is loved by all.

Glad to hear that Muse Watson is heading back to NCIS as Mike Franks…in whatever form that takes I would love to have him return to the show as a living person courtesy of a great storyline involving him being undercover or hidden away somewhere while recovering. I would however, hate for the writers to bring him back courtesy of a Bobby Ewing /Dallas ‘dream’ scenario. THAT would be a shark jump too many and the show would lose all credibility. Just saying. But definitely great to see MW back this coming season.

The character is a combination of the writing, directing, and acting. Some people seem to think when we complain about the character, we are talking ONLY about the actress. She’s a part of it, but only a part. The writing is also a huge part. The character was poorly conceived and even more poorly executed.

I miss the team too. All Glasberg ever allows the writers to offer is Gibbs angst, Gibbs in danger, Gibbs on the brink of death, Super Gibbs, and Gibbs as the only brave and heroic character, Gibbs the wise, Gibbs as the case closer. The Gibbs Show is repeating itself. Sounds like the premier is going to be “Life Before His Eyes” take two.

Maybe the reason they’re focusing so much on Gibbs is because some people have lost interest in the story lines. Because the last two seasons have actually been about Bishop. Season 11 I’d have sworn it was the Bishop show. And that carried on into season 12. I’d rather watch episodes about Gibbs than have to put up with Bishop.

Making it the Bishop show in season 11 was a huge misfire. In season 12, they toned her down big time, but she added even less to the show. THey wasted hours of time on her personal life, while she contributed nothing of any value to the team. Never has a character on the show received so much screen time for so little value added. She is not an asset to the team in any way.

Well this season was all about Gibbs and the season finale had the lowest live viewing numbers that it has in a long time. I think Tony fans are giving up. It’s obvious that the current powers that be are only allowed to flatter Gibbs and make him sympathetic. They have turned on Weatherly and have turned his DiNozzo into the resident do nothing butt monkey. Meanwhile the all Gibbs all the time show continues with another season of super/tragic/brooding Gibbs focus and angst.

Agreed. Well you see she/he can’t handle folks who aren’t satisfied with The Dramas and Tragedies of Gibbs Show. Since Harmon has always had top billing it’s just dandy if the lesser stars are marginalized and diminished to give us an unvarying and steady diet of The Gibbs Show. It matters not that tptb are now repeating themselves badly and that the show isn’t clever, intelligent, or funny anymore as long as we get to see Harmon’s character suffer or heroically prevail again. When called on her/his rude and predictable behavior he/she offers nothing more than unsubstantiated disagreement and more insults.

I have answered this many times, and every time I do, the person who asks says I’m lying. I can’t do anything about that. I’m telling the truth.
My first choice was Diane Neal. I also enjoyed several of the women guest stars in season 11, such as Margo Harshman, Kellie Williams, and Laura Seay. The Admiral’s Daughter was a terrific actress and had great chemistry with Tony. Those are some specific actresses. In general terms, however, I think they went totally the wrong way with casting an intel analyst. The team already has enough geeks, and they need someone physical.
My PREFERENCE, if we couldn’t have Diane Neal, would have been to go totally different. Hire a female Gulf War veteran, preferably someone of color. The show has become far too white bread after the deaths and departures of the last few years, and Bishop didn’t improve that in the least.

Thanks for your response…and i’m not going to say you’re lying I wouldn’t have had a problem with Diane Neal except that as head investigator for CGIS she was Gibbs equal and that may have been looked at as a step back for Borin to join the team as for your other choices no problem with any of them and I guess we will never really know…but as much as you dislike Bishop there would have been fans that would have disliked anyone who wasn’t named Ziva. Easy to fit in Borin. Write a story where she gets in trouble at CGIS and has to resign, then Gibbs takes her on, with a demotion. Done. THe lack of imagination makes me laugh. :) Besides, lots of people have had demotions on NCIS (all women, funny enough). Kate was elite SS with Yankee White clearance, so that was a step down. Ziva was a control officer at Mossad, and she took a step down as well. And Bishop got the biggest demotion of all. NSA analysts start at GS 11 and go up from there. As a supposedly GREAT analyst she would be GS 13 at LEAST. NCIS probationary agents start at GS 6 or so. That’s a 50% pay cut. And we were never given any explanation why she wanted to destroy her very successful NSA career, where everyone listened to her, to become an incompetent NCIS probie who worships GIbbs. I think it’s veyr interesting that people accept the Bishop demotion with no question whatsoever, but insist that Borin cannot take one step down for any reason.

I loved Mike Franks in the past, especially the humorous scenes or one liners — ” float a cherrio in it” or “fill my memory with naked women”. I’ll take him as Gibbs conscience even though by the nature of it has to be serious. I also agree that Gibbs has to return. He’s the heart and soul of the show and the other characters are what they are because of their interaction with him. I sincerely hope Mark Harmon is in it until the end and that the “Core Four”, in particular, go out together.

My opinion? Bring back Mike Franks alive – it doesn’t matter how. The writers should make a story up and say that Franks was required for a top-secret mission in Russia where he was infiltrating the same people he did years ago (could be to do with the Russian arms dealers from much older episodes?)
Honestly though, I wouldn’t care if the writers just said “oh, we didn’t mean to kill him off- he’s alive everyone!” because Mike/Muse Watson is an amazing character/actor.
I’m sure Gibbs will make a full recovery. But maybe he’ll be out for an episode or so. Who knows

When ever Gibbs is on the brink of death or having an extra heavy dose of angst (both of which seem to happen frequently) Franks appears. Almost without a doubt Franks will be there to coax Gibbs back from the white light after his latest near fatal encounter. I just wish they’d come up with something new. Franks was there in Life Before His Eyes which had the same plot. Nothing against Muse Watson but they need to retire ghost Franks.
