‘Mr. Robot’ episode 5 review: Steel Mountain; this revolution will be televised

“Mr. Robot” is a show that is for the most part unnerving, and it wants it to be so. It really wants you to get at times lost in these characters and this journey. Of course, there are also times where you are just a little bit lost, period.

Unfortunately, we did have a certain element of that tonight when it comes to the character of Tyrell. We understand that he is trying to establish some better standing for himself in Evil Corp, and yet at the same time we do not fully understand every single one of his motives just yet or why he chooses to operate the way that he does. What was the meaning of the intimidation scene late in the episode? We are still working on piecing that one together to the best of our ability.

The good news tonight was seeing Angela finally cut herself off from Ollie, and we actually enjoyed watching her seize some power back in her own way. While she may have gone a little bit too far, this is at least the sort of gusto we want to see in this character. At the moment, she probably is our second-favorite character on the show next to Elliot, and the journey of the past two episodes is a big part of the reason why.

Elliot’s shining moments tonight came in his operations around Steel Mountian. He managed to make it out of there without landing in any significant how water, but at the same time we’re not calling this a victory for FSociety. We do hope that this leads to more undercover missions for Elliot in the future. Did anyone think that the commercial for Steel Mountain was a little reminiscent of “Better Off Ted” season 1? Maybe it is just us.

We’re not going to say this episode was our favorite this season, mostly because it wasn’t. It was almost too obtuse, and had too much story we’re not sure we needed. It is watching an episode like this that sometimes does make us believe that this series could have been better served by a smaller overall order. Grade: B-.
