‘Doctor Who’ season 9: Steven Moffat on the problem with movie talk

Doctor Who -Is there a possibility of there being a “Doctor Who” movie at some point in the future? While nothing is confirmed on this particular subject and it feels incredibly unlikely to ever happen, this is something that continues to remain a subject of conversation. It will probably continue to be over the coming months and years, mostly because you are dealing with something that is an enormously popular franchise. Anytime that you have something that fits this particular bill, there will be people who want to try to expand it into other mediums to make more money.

Ultimately, this is precisely what Steven Moffat and the majority of folks over at the BBC seem to want to avoid … if at least they were to ever decide to even make a movie based on the show. Speaking at Comic-Con to IGN, the longtime showrunner made it clear that nobody has an interest in exploiting the franchise, or doing something with it that would not be right by the show’s fans:

“[What] I think is nobody at all, including the BBC, is just trying to make a fast buck out of Doctor Who. We’re trying to make a Doctor Who that is of lasting value. So we will do only what is best for the TV series.”

Moffat also went on to add that there are a variety of other issues that could enter the mix with a “Doctor Who” movie, regardless of whether or not you were talking about continuity or whether or not you put the same Doctor in the TV and film world at the same time:

“If it’s the same Doctor, what do we do, take all that time off? Do you really want one big movie instead of a whole series? Because that’s the arithmetic. If it’s a different Doctor, suddenly you’re trying to promote two Doctors at the same time, and how does that work? You don’t have one James Bond in the movies and one James Bond on a TV series. So I think there’s problems with it.”

We don’t know about you, but we really do not want two different Doctors out there at the same exact time. Not only that, but we also feel pretty confident that we don’t want to see the show take a long time off for a movie. We’d rather have 12 really great episodes and a Christmas Special that one movie with better effects.
