‘The Astronaut Wives Club’ episode 5 preview: First look at Yvonne Strahovski, cast in ‘Flashpoint’

One of the interesting ways in which ABC is promoting “The Astronaut Wives Club” is that they are realizing that while there is a certain amount of value in hyping up the characters, one of the ways that you are really going to get more people watching is by mentioning key historical events. These are things that the majority of people out there are going to be familiar with, and they may attract some more viewers. The show already has some familiar faces on board, from JoAnna Garcia Swisher to Yvonne Strahovski to Wilson Bethel, and the idea of astronauts and space travel is always intriguing.

“Flashpoint” is the title for the next installment, and the synopsis below hints at everything from Civil rights to women’s rights and also politics coming into play:

“As the struggle for Civil Rights upends the nation, the Astrowives fight their own battles in their marriages and the world at large. Trudy learns of attempts to quash a budding astronaut training program for women, and John Glenn considers a run for public office.”

As important as these events all are, here is where we come back to the interesting way in which this is being promoted. You come for the drama or for the historical events, but you stay for the characters. We all know how the Civil Rights movement comes to an end, and we even know the stories of some of these astronauts. The challenge for the show is how they continue to flesh out these characters, and present some situations that we may not be familiar with. It’s a challenge similar to what “Masters of Sex” has.
