‘True Detective’ season 2, episode 4 spoilers: Taylor Kitsch lays out key scenes ahead for Paul

HBO logoThrough the first two episodes of “True Detective” season 2, we started to learn a thing or two about Paul, and what is probably the character’s greatest weakness in that he is not someone who really seems interested in unraveling who he is. He was a mystery even to those he cared about and spent time with.

However, these walls are starting to cave in, and this is something that you will have a chance to see even more of going into the next two episodes more than any other point this season. He’s dived in to try to find potential witnesses to what happened to Caspere, and the further in he gets, the more vulnerable he could be to exposing his true self. This is something that Taylor Kitsch, who has been brilliant so far in the series, comments on to The Hollywood Reporter:

“He’s unraveling. There are a couple scenes where you see him crack and not be able to hold on like he could before. Those are the scenes that just jumped out at me [to show] why he does what he does and acts how he acts. … [You’ll see] where he’s come from and how suppressed he’s been in that house and that relationship with his mother kind of unfolds. Then with the case, it’s a slow burn. With Paul, he has bigger beats with his home life and just the repercussions of acting on something within himself. The [weight] he puts on himself is enormous, the strain.”

Yet, what is interesting to us about Paul is that we almost count on him to get the job done even more so than just about anyone else on the series when the dust settles. Ray and Frank are almost in too deep with their own past, and while Ani seems to be skilled in her field, she is also hitting many brick walls.
