‘Suits’ season 5, episode 1 review: The can opener mystery resolved!

Suits -

There were some big events that took place on the season premiere of “Suits” Wednesday night, and yet for some reason we still find ourselves obsessing mostly over the origin story of a can opener. Yes, that is exactly what happens when it comes to our psyche sometimes.

The way that Aaron Korsh and the team wove that into the story was pretty brilliant. They found a way to throw it end there as a result of Harvey trying to send Donna a message that the two are no longer in business. After Donna tried to assuage some of Louis Litt’s paranoia over her potentially leaving, he asked for some more insight into just why this object was so important. She explained that it was a part of a ritual that they did going into court cases, and of course in true Louis fashion, he wants his own ritual now!

While Louis was paranoid regarding whether or not Donna would go back to Harvey, Harvey in turn was feeling strangely confident still that she would potentially come back. He entered therapy and was starting to be prescribed drugs, as he was secretly battling anxiety and other matters of what has transpired. He has to accept the fact that his secretary (and someone he may subconsciously love) may never come back.

Thanks to all the Harvey / Donna / Louis drama, we almost forgot about what Mike Ross was up to with Slattery, as he came up with another scheme to make sure that the firm had an upper hand. This was more of a typical “Suits” storyline, one that had a few corporate-bonding moments … but still not exactly one we’ll remember for the time being.

The real standouts tonight were Gabriel Macht (whose character tossed those pills in the toilet at the end of the episode), Sarah Rafferty, and Rick Hoffman. These three manage to bring so much power to their performances, they make this so much more than what would be classified as a “love triangle” on lesser shows. This is delightfully so much more complicated. Episode Grade: A-.
