‘Mistresses’ season 3, episode 2 review: The arrival of Calista Raines

Mistresses -At the tail end of the “Mistresses” season premiere, we got what was just a tiny taste of what the character of Calista Raines had to offer. During the second episode tonight entitled “I’ll Be Watching You,” we ultimately got so much more of a real showcase as to who this person is, and how fantastic we already feel that she is as an addition to this world.

In a very short amount of time, she and Joss have already started to bond. She is a famed fashion designer, and someone who Joss even looks up to. However, this episode was spent more with her trying to diffuse a situation with Calista when it comes to her her husband’s wandering eye (and wandering other parts, as well). In a sense, this may have been the perfect distraction when you consider everything else that Joss is going through at the moment. She still cannot get Savi to speak with her!

We feel like the Savi story will drift more and more to the background over time; to us, the weaker part of this episode came via the Karen / April stories. With Karen, much of what we saw was just about her own insecurities about the status of the group and her friendships after Savi’s departure. They were genuine, human moments, but not something that we will spend much time speaking about tomorrow.

Meanwhile, April is trying to figure out a way to make Lucy on her side again after lying about her father, and it took her almost constructing a new sort of family for her to smile again. We’ll reserve judgment once again here, but for the most part a great deal of our excitement tonight began and ended with the story of Calista and Jennifer Esposito’s performance. Episode Grade: B-.
