‘Home Fires’ episode 6 (finale) spoilers: Samantha Bond on Frances’ decision
“Home Fires” has in some ways been the surprise hit of the season so far for ITV. This is a show that drew some incredible ratings almost from the very beginning, and it has already been recommissioned for more new episodes. All in all, it is the most-popular scripted series for the network so far this year, and may be one of the best things they have going now that “Downton Abbey” is ending.
The interesting thing is that the show is ending its first season (or series, as they say in Britain) Sunday night, and in some ways the action is really just beginning as paranoia is starting to set in throughout the United Kingdom (including small Cheshire villages) that they may not be safe from the spread of Hitler during World War II.
So what we are going to see in Sunday’s episode is some people prepare for the worst. For example, Frances is going to learn how to shoot! Here is what actress Samantha Bond had to say in previewing this episode to What’s On TV:
“The village is near an air base and Liverpool is a major target for the Germans. So it’s all very real to Frances. She’s the person who would be at the front door holding the gun if the Germans invaded!”
There are going to be a variety of other major stories that are also brought on during this episode, with one of the major ones being if there is a way for Pat to come out the other side all right after suffering so much abuse. Sadly, there are never guarantees of happy endings in this world.
