‘The Fosters’ season 3, episode 1 review: The aftermath of the ‘car crash’
We have to start off our review of “The Fosters” premiere by feeling reasonably conflicted. Is it nice to know that Jesus is alive, and nobody was hurt? Sure, but at the same time we absolutely can’t stand how the show handled the cliffhanger from the end of season 2, making it look like it was all a dream. What’s the point of this?
The question above is at least what we started to think, only for the episode to further confuse us later by acting like the crash wasn’t a dream. We don’t really understand why the show chose to answer a cliffhanger in so confusing a way, and that is something that we’re still going to be scrambling to figure out moving forward. Ultimately, our feeling is that the crash did happen, but the dream at the beginning was still a little unnecessary when there couldn’t be some straight-up answers right away instead.
Once we get past that, the rest of the premiere episode was at least solid. We’re enjoying the Brandon storyline with him at school, dealing with a hand that was dealt to him where he realized he was there for composition, not performance. Also, he has a partner who is not in the least bit interested in working with him.
Meanwhile, Jude and Connor struggled with some of the early hurdles of being a young gay couple, including whether or not to actually disclose their relationship to anyone at school. Callie decided that she was going to let someone who she met on the street spend the night at the center, only to have him rob the place. Not the best move for her, since it led to her getting fired.
Overall, we’d love the episode so much more if we could get over the “dream” tease at the start. Maybe that will happen by the end of the season, but the wound’s still a little too raw. Grade: Incomplete.
